As the Pasadena community continued its period of remarkable growth through the turbulent years of the 1960s, sparking the need for a third high school. Sam Rayburn High School opened in 1964 with an enrollment of 2,560 students. The Texans began building a tradition of academic and athletic excellence that increased the level of competition among the three schools. A $20 million renovation was completed in 2003 adding a new science wing, completely renovated the interior of the campus and upgraded technology throughout the school.
